The August Adventure - Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social
August 12, 2023
Every time I think about the Old School History Museum’s recent August Adventure, I take another trip down memory lane! If you were there with us at The Plaza on Saturday, August 12th, you understand! It was a glorious afternoon with more than 200 visitors sharing in the excitement! As with all the museum’s programs and activities, everything was FREE!
Young and old enjoyed grilled hot dogs, homemade (churned) ice cream, popcorn, and fresh lemonade! The Arts Barn dancers taught interactive dancing and directed the cake walks! Cakewalk winners took home beautifully wrapped boxes of yummy cupcakes.
The Face Painting line was constant for the entire three hours, and the children went away with designs of their own choice. (FYI, the face painters are both artists!) Down the hall, Miss Georgia was sharing Uncle Remus stories and Eatonton history, and the Barbershop quartet filled the air with music.
The Museum windows were filled with vintage toys - everything from dolls to toy trains. The children were fascinated by toys that did not need batteries! Also, we watched many adults smiling as they reminisced about their own dolls, trains, or favorite toys.
In the yard, some of our museum team had fun teaching children how to play Marbles, Jacks, Pick Up Sticks, and Tiddlywinks. Also outside, watermelon was offered by the slice, and a watermelon “Seed Spitting Contest” was a favorite activity!
Old-fashioned carnival decorations and several hundred balloons on ribbons went home with our younger guests to enjoy!
Now hear more good news! Due to the popularity of this year’s August Adventure, the OSHM Board just voted to repeat the carnival theme next year! So mark your calendars for Saturday, August 10, 2024, join us at The Plaza, and take your own walk down memory lane!
