Katy Ross will discuss a variety of plants that have been used traditionally by Native Americans, early settlers, and people still today, either as garden plants, native plants, or introduced plants (weeds) from Europe. She will discuss their historic and traditional uses of plants as well as plants that are beneficial for our local pollinators.
Here are some examples -
Callicarpa Americana- beautyberry- ornamental shrub, used as a mosquito and tick deterrent and researched by the University of Mississippi as a substitute for deet , excellent pollinator plant, and bird attractor.
Monarda fistulosa- bee balm used as a tea traditionally for upper respiratory ailments, used by the Oswego people, excellent pollinator plant for sunny gardens.
Plantago major- broadleaf plantain, introduced from Europe. Used as a folk medicine to treat wounds, stings, and insect bites.
*Note that Katy Ross will not be discussing or promoting how to prepare herbs/plants or endorse them for any treatments or ailments.
